This week we’re taking a look at how our tomato varieties are looking in the glasshouses with a short minute or so walk-through video. The tomatoes are looking very healthy at this stage and so hopefully a good sign for the fruit and harvest for the shelves at Farm To Table, farmers markets and local supply.

Signs of life!
Well, what a stormy end to 2021 and start of 2022 we had! Our final blog post of 2021 saw us assessing the damage post Storm Arwen and, unfortunately, a good portion of early 2022 has been taken up assessing the considerably worse (for us) damage caused by storms Corrie and Malik. As you’ll see below, our polytunnels were completely
Storm Arwen
What a horrendous storm this weekend past – Arwen! Strong winds and much damage from trees down, power lost to thousands and really freezing temperatures making for an awful combination here in the North East and elsewhere. At Farm to Table we have a tunnel standing well. The winter crops are none the worse and glad of protection from the
Tae a mouse (or two!)
The first frosts arrived earlier this week, yet what beautiful mornings. The misty chill lying low across the fields, the hills lit with the rising glow of the sun and the shades in the blue of the sky. Of course this cold weather is bringing small creatures to seek some shelter and food store for winter. One of the tasks
Winter sowing complete… now tidy up time!
All the sowings have now been planted and the main tunnels are lush green and full of goodness. This produce – much of which has been featured in our previous blog posts – will be tended and kept ready for winter salads and so on for Farm To Table. We’re particularly delighted to see the Pak Choi going strong! On
The humble lettuce
I confess that salad and winter never seemed to equate in my thinking until recent years. Salads were once hardly worthy of the title – a piece of lettuce, tomato and cucumber thrown on a plate! For me it was while in the States that I was introduced to a friend who made the most amazing salads and it changed
Get to know your pumpkins
Just alongside the tunnels is our Pumpkin Patch – home to our Pick Your Own Pumpkins event this year. The pumpkins began their life at Westerton in the seed tunnel back in March. The weather meant much tending and care around them as they began to sprout and grow. May held things up with it’s cold blast, but eventually some
Packed with goodness – a look at our Pak Choi
This week we want to highlight what we think is a beautiful looking vegetable and believe it or not it is a form of cabbage. In fact, it is the same species as the turnip! Pak Choi, also known as Snow Cabbage, is a Chinese vegetable used in stir fry. It has grown in China for over 1,500 years. It is
Leaf life!
We’ve mentioned Mizuna and how good it is in a previous post. A close relative is Mibuna, with clusters of long, narrow leaves with a peppery, mild mustardy flavour. It is a highly nutritious Asian green. The long, slender, spear-shaped greens can be lightly cooked or added to salads, soups, and stir-fries. At Farm to Table we now have the
Know your radishes?
Believe it or not, radishes are a somewhat underestimated or forgotten vegetable! Yet Radishes are an old and venerable vegetable. They originated in China and spread quickly to Europe and the Mediterranean. Planted out only 2 weeks ago at the time of writing, our first batch are ready to harvest already. They pack a healthy punch as fantastic source of
